Cappelle, Jan van de (1626–1679)

Dutch marine painter and etcher. His paintings of ships are especially notable for their skies. He also produced some winter landscapes and etchings in the manner of Aert van de Neer.

Cappelle was born in Amsterdam and became a follower of Simon de Vlieger (1601–1653), the first of the celebrated Dutch marinists.
