Carúpano

Port in Sucre state, Venezuela, situated on the Paría Peninsula; population (1996) 87,600. The town dates back to 1647; its main exports are coffee and cocoa (some 70% of Venezuelan cocoa is shipped from here). There is an airport nearby.

Here in 1816, Bolívar freed the black slaves who worked on the wealthy cacao plantations, thus acquiring new allies.
