Carabobo

State in northern Venezuela, bounded on the north by the Caribbean Sea; area 4,667 sq km/1,802 sq mi; population (1996) 1,823,767. Valencia (the capital), and its port, Puerto Cabello, 56 km/34 mi to the north, are the principal cities. Valencia is the second most important city in Venezuela. Carabobo is an agricultural area; its chief products are cotton and sugar cane; other crops include tobacco, rice, cacao, citrus fruits, and corn. This is the most developed agricultural and industrial region in Venezuela.

At the small town of Carabobo, some 30 km/19 mi southwest of Valencia, is a memorial to the battle (1821) that finally ended Spanish rule in northwestern South America.
