Carabobo

State in northern Venezuela, bounded on the north by the Caribbean Sea; area 4,667 sq km/1,802 sq mi; population (1996) 1,823,767. Valencia (the capital), and its port, Puerto Cabello, 56 km/34 mi to the north, are the principal cities. Valencia is the second most important city in Venezuela. Carabobo is an agricultural area; its chief products are cotton and sugar cane; other crops include tobacco, rice, cacao, citrus fruits, and corn. This is the most developed agricultural and industrial region in Venezuela.

At the small town of Carabobo, some 30 km/19 mi southwest of Valencia, is a memorial to the battle (1821) that finally ended Spanish rule in northwestern South America.

GM's president in Venezuela, Ronaldo Znidarsis, said General Motors plans to restart production at its plant in Carabobo state because President Hugo Chavez's government has agreed to sell the company the U.
In his comments, Chavez said that naval vessels were being sent to seize control of Port Cabello in Carabobo state and Maracaibo Port in Zulia state.
Two more governor posts, including the populous Carabobo state, were not immediately announced.
