Caraquet

Town in Gloucester County, northeast New Brunswick, Canada, on the Baie de Caraquet, on the south of Chaleur Bay, 47 km/29 mi east-northeast of Bathurst and 188 km/117 mi north-northwest of Moncton, near the mouth of the Caraquet River; population (1991) 4,600. Caraquet is a centre for tourism, fishing, and boatbuilding.

Settled from the 1750s by Acadians (former inhabitants of Nova Scotia), Bretons, and Québec fishermen, on what is popularly called the Acadian Peninsula, it today claims to be the cultural capital of Acadia; the Acadian Historical Village is 10 km/6 mi to the west. A fishing company based on the island of Jersey ruled its economy for over a century before World War II.
