Carbonari

Secret revolutionary society in southern Italy in the first half of the 19th century that advocated constitutional government. The movement spread to northern Italy but support dwindled after the formation of Mazzini's nationalist Young Italy movement, although it helped pave the way for the unification of Italy (see Risorgimento).
