CarborundumTrademark for a very hard, black abrasive, consisting of silicon carbide (SiC), an artificial compound of carbon and silicon. It is harder than corundum but not as hard as diamond. It was first produced in 1891 by US chemist Edward Acheson (1856-1931). |
