Carder, Frederick

Carder, Frederick (1863-1963)

English-born US glassmaker who moved to the USA in 1903. He is considered a founder of the modern glass movement. He perfected numerous glassmaking techniques including enamelling, etching, intarsia and cire perdue (‘lost wax’). He created over 8,000 designs, many of them in art nouveau style comparable in quality to Tiffany's works.

He was born in Staffordshire, England. He managed Steuben Glass Works and had a background in chemistry and metallurgy.
