dry ice

Solid carbon dioxide (CO2), used as a refrigerant. At temperatures above −79°C/−110.2°F, it sublimes (turns into vapour without passing through a liquid stage) to gaseous carbon dioxide.

Water vapour in the air cooled by the evaporating carbon dioxide condenses to a visible mist, which is often used in the theatre.
