cardigan

Knitted overgarment that buttons up in the front. The cardigan was popularized by Coco Chanel in the 1920s and 1930s as part of two- or three-piece outfits.

Originally a long-sleeved military jacket of knitted worsted, trimmed with fur or braid and buttoned down the front, it was named after James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan (1797-1868), who led the Charge of the Light Brigade. In the 20th century the style was adapted for casual wear.
