cardigan

Knitted overgarment that buttons up in the front. The cardigan was popularized by Coco Chanel in the 1920s and 1930s as part of two- or three-piece outfits.

Originally a long-sleeved military jacket of knitted worsted, trimmed with fur or braid and buttoned down the front, it was named after James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan (1797–1868), who led the Charge of the Light Brigade. In the 20th century the style was adapted for casual wear.
