Cardillac

Opera by Paul Hindemith (libretto by F Lion, based on E T A Hoffmann's story Das Fräulein von Scudéri), first produced in Dresden, Germany, on 9 November 1926; a revised version was produced in Zurich, Switzerland, on 20 June 1952. The story tells how the goldsmith Cardillac murders his clients to recover his handywork. After stabbing his daughter's fiancé, Cardillac reveals he is a murderer and is killed by a mob.
