Cardington

Village in Bedfordshire, England, 5 km/3 mi southeast of Bedford; population (2001) 320. It is the site of an RAF camp. Large hangars here housed the R100 and R101 airships in the 1920s. One of the hangars is now used by the Buildings Research Establishment. John Howard, the prison reformer, lived in Cardington for most of his life.

At 812 feet long by 180 feet high, the Cardington hangar enabled Nolan to shoot fantastically vast cityscapes without having to resort to much computer- generated imagery, which was kept to as bare a minimum as possible - all in the name of trying to keep it real.
