Carey, George Leonard (1935– )

103rd archbishop of Canterbury 1991–2002. A product of a liberal evangelical background, he was appointed bishop of Bath and Wells in 1987.

His support of the ordination of women priests brought disagreement during his first meeting with Pope John Paul II in 1992.
