Carey, Mathew

Carey, Mathew (1760–1839)

Irish-born American publisher and bookseller who settled in the USA in 1784. He became an important publisher and wrote widely on economics and other subjects. In 1785 he founded the Pennsylvania Herald, noted for its detailed coverage of the legislature.

He was born in Dublin, Ireland, and fled to escape prosecution for anti-British publications. He also founded the Hibernian Society and America's first Sunday school.
