Andre, Carl (1935– )

US minimalist sculptor. He is best known for his use of industrial materials. His Equivalent VIII (1976; Tate Gallery, London), in which 120 bricks are stacked in two layers to form a mathematically devised rectangle, caused an outcry because it seemed to mock the traditional values of creativity and workmanship in art. Andre also pioneered earthworks.

Other works include the outdoor installations Blocks and Stones (1973) for the Portland Center for the Visual Arts, Oregon, and Stone Field Sculpture (1977) in Hartford, Connecticut.
