Carlevaris, Luca

Carlevaris, Luca (1663–1730)

Italian painter and etcher. He is considered to be the founder of Venetian 18th-century topographical painting. He studied painting in Rome under Flemish and Dutch artists and moved to Venice 1679, where he worked for English and other foreign visitors. Canaletto may have been his pupil.

A sketchbook (British Museum, London) contains studies of groups of figures as used in his views.
