Carling, Will(iam) David Charles (1965– )

English rugby union player. A centre, he won 72 caps for England between 1988 and 1997, including a record 59 as captain. He made his full England debut in January 1988, and was appointed England captain when only 22 years old. He captained England to Grand Slam Championships in 1991, 1992, and 1995, the World Cup final in 1991, and the World Cup semi-final in 1995. He was sacked as captain in 1995 after remarks made in a television interview, but was quickly reinstated by popular demand. He holds the world record for international appearances as captain, having captained England 59 times between 1988 and 1996. In 1997 Carling announced his retirement from competitive rugby.
