Carlingford

Seaport and market town in County Louth, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 1,300. It stands at the foot of Slieve Foye (590 m/1,935 ft) on Carlingford Lough, opposite the Mountains of Mourne. The town was founded by the Vikings and developed by the Normans, and St Patrick is reputed to have landed here on his return from Rome. King John's Castle and Taaffe's Castle are both of historical interest, as are the Mint, a fortified 15th-century house, and the Tholsel, a gate tower used as a jail during the 18th century.

Carlingford also has a number of 18th-century houses and the ruins of a 14th-century Dominican priory.

Carlingford was the birthplace of Thomas D'Arcy McGee (1825–1868), a Canadian politician and poet.
