Carlinville

City in west-central Illinois, USA, 60 km/37 mi south-southwest of Springfield; seat of Macoupin County; population (1990) 5,400. It is a trading centre for the region's corn, soybeans, apples, and, especially, livestock. Manufactures include steel pipe fittings, agricultural implements, gloves, and dairy products. There is coal mining and oil drilling in the vicinity.

The first white settlement, on Black Hawk hunting grounds, was established in 1815. Blackburn College (1837) is here. Beaver Dam State Park is 8 km/5 mi to the southwest.
