Carlisle

City and administrative headquarters of Cumberland County, south Pennsylvania, in the Cumberland Valley, 34 km/21 mi southwest of Harrisburg; population (2000) 18,000. Industries include carpets, shoes, tyres, electronics, and steel products. Carlisle was the site of a noted Indian school (1879-1918) attended by athlete Jim Thorpe, and has long been the home of Dickinson College (1773). The US Army War College moved to the city in 1951.

The city was laid out and incorporated in 1751. Its fort was a base during the French and Indian War (the North American arm of the Seven Years' War), and it served as headquarters for George Washington in 1794. An active station on the Underground Railroad (a network for escaped slaves), Carlisle was occupied briefly by Confederate troops in 1863.
