Carlos, Don (1545–1568)

Spanish prince. Son of Philip II, he was recognized as heir to the thrones of Castile and Aragón but became mentally unstable and had to be placed under restraint following a plot to assassinate his father. His story was the subject of plays by Friedrich von Schiller, Vittorio Alfieri, Thomas Otway, and others.
