Carlstadt

Borough in Bergen County, northeastern New Jersey, USA, on the Hackensack River, 5 km/3 mi southeast of Passaic; population (1990) 5,500. It is a highly industrialized municipality, manufacturing such products as surgical supplies, chemicals, clothing, textiles, and processed food.

In the late 19th century, Carlstadt was a cooperative, purchased from its original settlers by exiled German liberals.
