Carlyle, Alexander (1722–1805)

Scottish minister. In 1748 he became minister of Inveresk, Scotland, a position which he held for the rest of his life. He favoured the moderate party in the Church. He acted as moderator of the General Assembly in 1770. His Autobiography was published in 1860. He gained his degree from Edinburgh University and afterwards studied at the universities of Glasgow and Leiden.
