Carmack, George Washington

Carmack, George Washington (1860–1922)

US prospector. He is credited with being the first to discover Alaska's gold in 1896. He invested his money in mines and real estate in his home state of California.

He was born near San Francisco. He went to Alaska in 1884 and married a Tagish Indian woman. He abandoned his Indian wife and married a white woman around 1900.
