Carmarthen

Town and administrative centre of Carmarthenshire, southwest Wales, situated on the River Tywi, 15 km/9 mi north of Kidwelly; population (2001) 14,600. It is the agricultural centre for the productive dairy region of the Vale of Tywi.

Camarthen was formerly the Roman settlement of Maridunum. There are castle remains which date back to Henry I.

Features include the Carmarthenshire County Museum, which is housed in the Bishop's Palace; (the palace of the Bishops of St David's 1542–1974 where the New Testament was first translated into Welsh in 1567). Gwili steam railway is nearby. Carmarthen Heritage Centre opened in 1995 and tells the story of the influence of the River Tywi on the town.
