Carmel

City in Hamilton County, central Indiana, USA, 24 km/15 mi north of downtown Indianapolis; population (1990) 25,400. Formerly an agricultural trade centre, it is now a fast-growing residential and commercial suburb just outside Route 465.

Carmel

Town in southeastern New York, USA, 34 km/21 mi southeast of Newburgh; seat of Putnam County; population (1990) 28,800. In a lake- and reservoir-dotted region, it has long been a summer resort area, and is now home to many commuting to New York City, 56 km/35 mi to the south.

Railroad magnate Daniel Drew (1797–1879) was born here. Lake Mahopac is in Carmel; the town of Lake Carmel is in Kent township (to the north).
