Carnegie, Hattie (born Henrietta Kanengeiser) (1886-1956)

Austrian-born US fashion designer who emigrated to the USA as a child. She appropriated Andrew Carnegie's surname for her first hat shop in 1909. Creating a major fashion house, Carnegie reinterpreted French haute couture for Americans; she popularized the ‘little Carnegie suit’ and the simple black cocktail dress.

She was born in Vienna, Austria, before moving to New York City. She married John Zanft in 1927 but did not use his name in her public or professional life.
