Carnovsky, Leon

Carnovsky, Leon (1903-1975)

US librarian and educator. A professor at the Graduate Library School of the University of Chicago, he was managing editor of the Library Quarterly 1941-1963. He became known as a surveyor of libraries and library problems, both in the USA and abroad.

He was born in St Louis, Missouri. He was chairman of the American Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee. Particularly important among his numerous articles is ‘The Obligations and Responsibilities of the Librarian Concerning Censorship’ (1950). He retired in 1971.
