Carnute

Member of a Celtic people of central Gaul, who lived between the Seine and the Loire. Their chief towns were Cenabum (Orléans) and Autricum (Chartres). The Carnutes were subdued by Julius Caesar, and in return for military services retained their institutions under Augustus, becoming part of the Roman Empire.
