Carolingian art

The art of the reign of Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor (800-814), and his descendants until about 900. In line with his revival of learning and Roman culture, Charlemagne greatly encouraged the arts, which had been in eclipse. Illuminated manuscripts, metalwork, and small-scale sculpture survive from this period. See also medieval art.
