Carpeaux, Jean-Baptiste

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.03 sec.

Carpeaux, Jean-Baptiste (1827–1875)

French sculptor. His lively naturalistic subjects include La Danse 1865–69 for the Opéra, Paris (now in the Louvre, Paris) and the Neapolitan Fisherboy 1858 (Louvre, Paris).

The Romantic charm of his work belies his admiration for Michelangelo. He studied in Italy 1856–62 and won the Prix de Rome scholarship 1854.
