Carpenter, William Benjamin (1813–1885)

English physician. He graduated as an MD from Edinburgh University in 1839, was made Fellow of the Royal Society in 1844. He was a gold medallist of the Royal Society in 1861 and was Fullerian professor of physiology at the Royal Institute from 1845. His works include Principles of General and Comparative Physiology (1839) and The Microscope and its Revelations (1856). He was registrar of the University of London (1856–79). Carpenter was born in Exeter, England.
