Carpinteria

City in Santa Barbara County, southwestern California, USA, on the Santa Barbara Channel of the Pacific Ocean, 19 km/12 mi southeast of Santa Barbara; population (1990) 13,700. The city is a centre for the shipment of citrus fruit, beans, olives, and walnuts.

It was founded in 1863 on the site of an Indian village and asphalt pits. Carpinteria State Beach is nearby.
