Carr, Benjamin

Carr, Benjamin (1768–1831)

US composer and publisher. He was the first to publish the song ‘Yankee Doodle’ in the USA and his ballad opera The Archers, or Mountaineers of Switzerland, first performed in New York in 1796, is the first US opera of which music parts survive.

Arriving in Philadelphia in 1793, he founded a music publishing business there, becoming known as the Father of Philadelphia Music. He was a co-founder of the Musical Fund Society in 1820 and was also active in New York and Baltimore as a publisher, concert promoter, and organist.
