Carranza, Bartolomé de

    0.06 sec.

Carranza, Bartolomé de (1503-1576)

Spanish priest. He entered the Dominican order, and became professor of theology at Valladolid University. Charles V sent him to the Council of Trent. He accompanied Philip II to England, and became Queen Mary's confessor, working zealously to establish Catholicism. Appointed archbishop of Toledo in 1557, he was accused of heresy by the Inquisition, ostensibly because of his Comentarios sobre el Catechismo Christiano/Commentaries on the Christian Catechism (1558), and spent the rest of his life in prison. Carranza was born in Miranda, Navarre, Spain.
