Carriacou

Largest island in the Grenadines in the West Indies, 37 km/23 mi northeast of Grenada; length 13 km/8 mi; width 3–7 km/2–4 mi; area 34 sq km/13 sq mi; population (1997) 7,000. Cotton is now the principal crop, although the island was once a sugar-growing region; the old sugar-cane fields are now used for cotton. The capital of the island is Hillsborough, which is located on the west coast and has an estimated population of 600.

Carriacou is an internationally renowned rendezvous for sailing enthusiasts; a schooner regatta is held every year on the island. Traditional dances of West African origin, called Big Drum Dances, are also held annually. Carriacou elects a member to the legislative council of Grenada.
