Carrillo, Julián (1875-1965)

Mexican composer. He studied at the National Conservatory in Mexico City, won a violin prize, and made further studies at Leipzig and Ghent Conservatories in Europe. Returning to Mexico in 1905, he was active as a violinist and conductor as well as a composer. He experimented in his later works with music using small fractional divisions of the scale.

Opera

Ossian (1902), Mexico in 1810 (1909), Xulitl (1920, revised 1947).

Church music

two Masses, Requiem.

Orchestral

six symphonies (1901-48), three suites, overture 8 de Septiembre, symphonic poem Xochimilco for orchestra; fantasy for piano and orchestra, concerto for flute, violin, and cello.

Chamber

four string quartets, piano quintet, string sextet; four violin and piano sonatas.

Other

40 works in fractional scales, including Ave Maria for chorus, Fantasía Sonido 13 for chamber orchestra, Preludio a Cristobál Colón for soprano and ensemble.
