Carroll, Diahann

Carroll, Diahann (1935– )

US actor and singer. Star of No Strings (1962), she appeared in the movie I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1979). When she appeared in Julia 1968–71, and Dynasty 1984–87, she was the first black American woman to star in her own television series.

She was born in New York City. Once a nightclub singer and model, she was at one time married to Vic Damone. She first appeared on Broadway in The House of Flowers (1954), working in films during the 1950s as well.
