Carron

Village in Falkirk unitary authority, Scotland, on the River Carron, now a northern suburb of Falkirk; population (2001) 5,400. Its ironworks, originally founded in 1759, produces cast-iron goods, including intricate and specialized castings.

The ironworks manufactured carronades (a ship's short-calibred gun) and other guns until 1852, when they were superseded by more modern armaments.

Carron comes from the canton of Valais, typically thought of as the most authentic, "wild," and traditional part of Switzerland--though these traditions turn out to have been fabricated in the nineteenth century out of a need for national identity.
