Carstairs

Two distinct settlements in South Lanarkshire unitary authority, Scotland, about 32 km/20 mi southeast of Hamilton. They consist of the small service centre of Carstairs village, and Carstairs Junction, 2 km/1mi mi to the southwest, where the Edinburgh railway line diverges from the Carlisle to Glasgow route; population (2001) Carstairs 700; Carstairs Junction 800. A large state prison is located nearby. Sand and gravel quarrying is a major industry of the area.
