Mostaganem

Industrial port (metal and cement) in northwest Algeria; population (1999 est) 161,700. It is the capital of Mostaganem Department and lies on the Mediterranean Sea 90 km/56 mi east of Oran. Linked by pipeline with the natural gas fields at Hassi Messaoud, it also exports cereals, vegetables, and wine; industries include wood-pulp processing and the manufacture of paper, cement, electrical equipment, flour, furniture, and cigarettes.

The town was founded in the 11th century has an 11th-century citadel. It is divided into two by a natural ravine; the modern quarter on the left and the Muslim quarter on the right bank.
