Carter, Gwendolyn Margaret (1906-1991)

Canadian-born political scientist who became a naturalized US citizen in the early 1940s. She focused on Africa, particularly on apartheid; her books include The Politics of Inequality (1958, later revised) and Which Way is South Africa Going? (1980).

She was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and gained a Harvard PhD. She taught at Smith College 1943-64, Northwestern University 1964-74, and Indiana University 1974-84.
