Carter, Manley Lanier, Jr (1947-1991)

US astronaut and physician. He was a mission specialist on the Discovery space shuttle flight of November 1989, carrying military and other payloads. He was subsequently assigned to the first International Microgravity Laboratory flight. Carter was selected as an astronaut in 1984. He died in the crash of a commercial aircraft in April 1991.
