Carter, Rosalynn (born Smith) (1927– )

US first lady, the wife of Jimmy Carter, whom she married in 1946. An active first lady, she spoke out on human rights, travelled abroad, and sat in on many cabinet meetings. Deeply hurt by Carter's failure to be re-elected, she recovered to join him in his post-presidential activities.

She was born in Plains, Georgia. She helped her husbandrun his family peanut farm, before campaigning actively for him in 1976.
