The elder of the two Cary sisters, Alice Cary worked entirely in collaboration with her sister Phoebe to produce books of poetry and hymns. Self-taught, they drew material from their early surroundings and girlhood friends. Always together, they died within five months of one another.

US poets. They were sisters. They published a joint volume, Poems, 1849 and in 1850 moved to New York where they became the centre of a literary circle, producing collections of poems, hymns, and parodies.
