Casamance

River in Senegal; length 320 km/199 mi. It forms an estuary in the Casamance region of the country, south of the Gambia.

The topography of Senegal varies from dry and arid to the north to lush vegetation in the southern region of Casamance.
Twelve veterinary posts were selected to perform serologic surveillance along the Senegal River Valley, in the pastoral area of Ferlo, including Barkedji, and in Upper Casamance (the southern, forested area), because of the previous RVF outbreaks in these places (Figure 1).
Two weeks after the start of the rebellion in Guinea-Bissau, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioners for Refugees reported that most of the population had been forced to flee the capital of Bissau, and move towards Casamance - the southern region of Senegal.
