Cass, Lewis

Cass, Lewis (1782–1866)

US political leader and diplomat. He was appointed secretary of war 1831 by President Jackson, and served as US minister to France 1836–42. Elected to the Senate 1945, he was the unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate 1848, returning to the Senate 1849–56. In the Buchanan administration 1857–60, he served as secretary of state.

Cass was born in Exeter, New Hampshire, studied law in Ohio and qualified as a barrister 1802. He was US marshal for Ohio 1807–12. During the Anglo-American War 1812–14, he rose to the rank of brigadier general and was appointed governor of the Michigan Territory 1813.
