Cassano d'Adda

Town in Lombardy region, northern Italy, on the River Adda, 25 km/15 mi east of Milan; population (1991) 16,300. It was the scene of three battles: in 1259 between the Guelph and Ghibelline factions; in 1705 a victory of Marshal Vendôme over Prince Eugène of Savoy, during the War of the Spanish Succession; and in 1799 a defeat of the French under Gen Moreau by the Russians and Austrians.
