lutetiumSilver-white, metallic element, the last of the lanthanide series, atomic number 71, relative atomic mass 174.97. It is used in the ‘cracking’, or breakdown, of petroleum and in other chemical processes. It was named by its discoverer, French chemist Georges Urbain, after his native city.
